I asked on instagram (@laurmonds) what type of content people wanted to see and a few people mentioned they wanted to see my hair care routine (and one person – shout out to Aly – wanted to see a specific product I don’t shut up about). I have been bleaching my hair since I was like a junior in high school. It look me a strangely long time to realize that just bleaching your hair alone completely destroys it – unless you take care of it the right way. So, just to be 100% up front with y’all, I still have split ends, but there are significantly less than a few years ago when I did nothing to salvage my hair. Follow along below for tips and products I use that I find help the consistency of my hair. I should also mention I have fine hair, but a lot of it. Ok, here we go:
So, I do not wash my hair every day. I usually go two days without washing my hair. I know it’s not for everyone, but I feel like the natural oils from my scalp help my hair a lot – making my hair softer and shinier. I also try not to use dry shampoo unless I absolutely need to, I feel like dry shampoo soaks up the oil that is helping my hair and then that kind of defeats the purpose. If my hair starts getting really oily the day I am going to wash it, I usually put my hair in a braid or do some type of work-appropriate bun.
When I do wash my hair, I only use a little shampoo and I really massage it into my scalp (literally like how they do it when you are getting your hair done and they wash it – scalp massage). This gets EVERYTHING out of your hair. In the past, I am guilty of just lathering shampoo on the top of my head quickly just to get the job done – this isn’t efficient. Your hair will be SO much cleaner and look better for longer if you take the time to do a full scalp massage when you shampoo. You ideally want to do this for 2 mins. Also, I have read that scalp massages promote hair growth since you are increasing blood flow to your scalp! When I wash my hair, I don’t always use conditioner. I used to use it only on my ends, but I found that it makes my hair more oily. I use conditioner like once every two weeks and use the tiniest bit – again, only on my ends.
When I brush my hair, I start from the ends and work my way up. It sucks when your hair is literally in a knot and your strands are just breaking every time you run the brush through. Starting at your ends prevents this – give it a try.
I use some type of oil in my hair every day. Right now, I am using bio silk. I notice that it makes my hair less puffy and more shiny and it smells good. I only use a small drop of this, otherwise, it’s overkill and your hair with be incredibly oily. I am not sure if this is something you should or shouldn’t be doing daily, but I figure since I am not conditioning my hair and my hair tends to be on the dry side, it doesn’t hurt. I notice that my hair does not get more oily from using hair oils on it as long as I stick to the ends only. I honestly think my hair just soaks it in.
I use a hair mask 1-2 times a week. I literally will go to work with one in so that I can keep it in for even longer than just a few hours (I just slick back my hair in to a tight low bun when I do this). I use Olaplex # 3 every weekend – you only need to keep this in for 10 minutes minimum, BUT I never do this. I keep this stuff in for hours.. even overnight sometimes (if you do this, put your hair in a braid and keep your hair away from your face and eyes). When you use this olaplex, you’re going to want to have damp hair and then very liberally apply the product all through the bottom part of your hair (you don’t need to go near scalp since that is probably healthy hair) and comb it through. I always tie my hair back so I don’t get the product everywhere. You will want to scrub your hair really good with shampoo to get this product out when you are done leaving the mask in. Again, leave this on for as long as you can because it will be more effective. The other hair mask I use is La’ Bang Hydrate Me Extreme. This product is all natural oils (coconut oil, argan oil, macadamia nut oil, jojoba oil & lemongrass oil). This oil is good for your scalp too so feel free to use all over your head. You will want to apply this all over your hair – and again, comb through so it reaches all of your strands. Tie your hair back and leave this in for a few hours. You will want to scrub your hair really well when you are done leaving this mask in too since this is purely oils. I should also mention that both of these hair masks smell amazing. Leave a comment below or DM me on instagram if you have questions about these.
When I use heat on my hair (extremely rare), I make sure to use a heat protectant spray always. I have the Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Thermal Protection Hair Spray (this smells AMAZING). I spray this on the ends of my hair (damp or dry hair is fine), comb through, and then use whatever heat styling I was going to do. Again, I really never use heat on my hair. I usually let my hair air dry since I have a natural beachy wave.
Lastly, I use Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides every day in my morning smoothie. This stuff is supposed to help repair hair and skin. I have noticed that since beginning using it (about a year ago), the composition of my hair has definitely improved – although, it’s hard to tell if it is from the collagen or me just taking better care of my hair!
I am definitely still very much so learning about hair care and this routine will likely change again. What do you do to keep your hair healthy?
Until next time,
Lauryn xo
